What your kids eat affects how they learn. For the first 12 years of life, about 80 percent of what children learn is presented to them visually. And as children learn, their brains grow. Food is one of many factors that affect how children develop healthy minds.
WebMD identifies 10 important brain foods:
- Eggs – Rich in omega-3s, zinc and lutein, eggs provide important nutrients to help kids concentrate
- Greek yogurt – Full-fat Greek yogurt helps keep brain cell membranes flexible, which is vital to the processes of sending messages and receiving information
- Spinach and kale – These vital greens are full of folate and vitamins important for brain cell growth
- Purple cauliflower – This vegetable is low in sugar and contains high amounts of fiber, vitamin B6 and folate, which help regulate mood, memory and attention
- Fatty fish – A good source of vitamin D and omega-3s, eating fish regularly helps protect the brain against memory loss
- Healthy meats – To help kids with focus and good behavior, select meats that are free of artificial ingredients, dyes, flavoring, preservatives and sweeteners, as these toxins can create brain fog
- Seeds and nuts – Full of essential fatty acids, vitamins, minerals and protein, delicious nuts and seeds promote healthy moods and nervous systems
- Oatmeal – Oatmeal is a great breakfast food, packed with the protein and fiber needed to keep heart and brain arteries clear
- Plums and apples – These tasty treats contain quercetin, an antioxidant that helps boost memory and thinking skills
- Turmeric – This cooking spice contains curcumin, which helps the brain grow, fight inflammation and block formation of Alzheimer’s plaque
